NASA's Hubble Space Telescope took this picture of Mars eleven hours before its closest approach to Earth in 60,000 years.

The image was assembled from a series of exposures taken between 0350 IST and 0442 IST on August 27, when the red planet was 55,760,220 km away from Earth.

Many small, dark, craters can be seen on Mars, attesting to the Hubble telescope's ability to reveal finer details of the planet.
